Keeping warm this winter

When I saw the news about snow in Maui, Hawaii I thought it was a good time to give people ideas to stay warm.

It started a few years back. I was looking for an electric blanket and my buddy Joe suggested a heated mattress pad. The mattress pad is so much nicer. Here is one from Sunbeam that I use and it has worked great to take the chill off the bed.

Last year I got my wife a heated hoodie. It's by ororo. It does a great job of keeping her warm and it can even charge your phone.

They also make a jacket for Men and a jacket for Women.

Sports watch

If you want a cheaper watch that works with Android and Apple phones the Amazefit ip is a simple watch that works and it's on sale. I have used the Apple watch and the Bip. I like the Bip because it is simple like my old Pebble watch and I don't need a phone to track my running. It has a built in GPS and the battery lasts for close to a month. If you don't need all the bells and whistles this is the watch for you.

The best steak and fish

If you like fish or steak you need to learn how to cook sous vide. There is a cooker on sale at amazon and it is a good one. There are other models if you like a product with more features but this one is good and easy to use. It comes from a well known brand. I cook my steaks at 145F for 1 hour per inch of steak. You cook to the temperature that you like the steak done from 125F to 150F. Cooking fish is usually 135F for 30 minutes. Try different temps and times for tenderness. It is fun to try out. I vacuum pack the food with salt, pepper and garlic powder. You can use a ziplock bag in a sink of water or get a vacuum appliance.

The New Supra

Many people are talking about the new Supra. Spec wise the new model is similar to the last Supra that they stopped building in 2002. The new car is more balanced with the 50/50 weight distribution. The new Supra has an average suspension, brakes are good, and the car is heavy. Toyota is making a well priced car for people that loved or dreamed about the old Supra. That is why the specs are so so and it has an automatic transmission. All sports cars should only come with a stick shift. That is why it used to be called a standard transmission because an automatic was optional and should be on all sports cars. I get it, there is me and a few dozen others that think this way. The new Supra should have a double clutch transmission. It should have a twin turbo V6 that makes 500+ hp. Think the Toyota version of the GTR or a cheaper LFA. It should have double A arm suspension like a real sports car. Normal 17" wheels that can roll on cracked roads with a race edition that can have the crazy thin tires. The 50/50 weight distribution is good but the driver should be at the center point. AWD would be nice but that makes it heavy and expensive. The price of 50k is ok but I wish it was in the 40's. What would be cool is a rear engined small 4l V8 with turbos. That would be an MR2 but that would be a cooler car to bring back. Why not redo the GT86 with a turbo V6 and some minor body shaping and call that a Supra. The bottom line is it's not even made in Japan. So wrong.

How to save money on your car

Most cars now have low profile tires that look cool but what most people don't know is they also make the ride ruff and kill the gas mileage. Unless you have some high end sports car it really does't make sense to use these types of tires. The other day I had used up the OEM tires and I needed to change them out and instead I changed from a 17" rim to a 15" rim and dropped the width of the tire to match the rim size. Under sizing so the circumference is the same but the width is little smaller. I get a much smoother ride and I get about 4 or 5 miles to the gallon more. On one trip I got 42mpg out of my 2015 Subaru Impreza the used to have trouble getting 36mpg. If you are needing new tires it is something to look into. The tire shop will give you an odd look but your tires will last longer and you will get better mpg in town and on the highway. Unless you drive for a formula one team you won't notice the performance difference.
